The Angel of the North

The Angel of the North is an amazing  sculpture of an angel with open arms which greets all visitors who arrive at Newcastle and Gateshead, two towns linked by seven bridges over the Tyne.
The Angel is the largest sculpture in Great Britain. It stands on a hill top and it can be seen from miles around.

It is 20 meters tall and its wings are 54 meters wide, almost as long as the wings of a jumbo jet. They are not flat but are angled 3.5 degrees forward to create a sense of embrace.

It’s made of a special weather resistant steel which contains copper. Its colour (red brown) is due to the fact that the surface oxidises.

It is visited by over 150,000 people every year.
